What the PWD‑888 is
The Wildlife Management Annual Report (PWD‑888) is TPWD’s form for documenting what you actually did under your PWD‑885 plan during the year: which practices, which activities, on what dates, with what results.
Under the Comptroller’s rules, the chief appraiser may require an annual report - and many districts request one every year or on a rotating review cycle. The correct posture: assume it’s coming, keep records like it’s guaranteed, and treat the request letter as an export button.
Why this form loses valuations
Wildlife valuations rarely die in the field - they die in February, when a landowner tries to reconstruct a year of undocumented weekends. No dates, no photos, no totals → a thin report → questions → review → risk. The fix isn’t heroic memory; it’s logging as you go.
What a strong report shows
- Practice-by-practice activity - each of your 3+ practices with the specific work performed.
- Dates and frequency - “protein feeders maintained year-round, filled 14 times” beats “fed deer.”
- Quantities - acres treated, stations maintained, boxes installed, surveys run, hogs removed.
- Results where you have them - census trends, browse recovery, brood sightings.
- Supporting evidence - photos with dates/locations, receipts, survey data sheets.

Timing
- When requested: respond by the deadline in the chief appraiser’s letter - commonly aligned with spring filing season.
